When a good employee becomes the wrong manager
Growth sometimes changes what a position requires.
A person who performed well in a smaller business may now face a fundamentally different role. The job may require managing through others, setting priorities and making decisions with less direct oversight. Begin with the requirements of the role, not a judgment about the person.
Put it to work
Clarify responsibilities, decision authority and measurable outcomes. Discuss the gap honestly, agree on support and checkpoints, and consider whether a different role would make better use of the person’s strengths.
